John R. Velton

Everyone has heard the story of how the super salesman attempted to sell another supersalesman and ended up by being sold himself.
That is exactly what happened to John R. Velton, manager of the Metropolitan Life Insurance company some 12 years ago in Tacoma, Washington. Velton was selling some investment securities and making a pretty good job of it. He tackled the local manager of the Metropolitan company and when he left his office he had not only failed to sell his securities but had been sold on the insurance company and immediately entered its employ.
In just exactly three years and eight months he was a manager of one of the branches, which is a rapid rise in any business.
Velton was born in Morenci, Arizona, May 28, 1895. He graduated from the University of Arizona and then entered the employment of the Ray Consolidated Copper company. Louis Cates, now president of the Phelps-Dodge, Inc. was general manager of the company.
One day he advised Velton to leave the company and go somewhere else. "There is no future in copper," he said.
Just then the war came along and Velton joined the navy being discharged as an ensign when war ceased.
He enrolled in the Pittsburgh School of Technology, and while waiting for the semester to begin went to Tacoma to visit his sister, planning to go east to school from there.
He visited so well that he suddenly found he did not have money enough to go east so he took the position selling securities.
He entered the employment of the Metropolitan April 26, 1920; was made assistant manager March 26, 1921 and December 31,l 1923 was made manager at Everett, Washington.
He is married, the father of one son, a member of the Rotary and their community cooperation committee; Weber Lodge No. 18, F. &A. M; executive board, Gateway council Boy Scouts; finance committee, Ogden Livestock show and chairman of the City Beautiful committee, Ogden Chamber of Commerce.

Death*John died on 12 January 1964 in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, at age 68. He died suddenly from a heart attack in Portland while on his return from a trip to San Francisco to visit his son.1,9,10
