- Places Index The following conventions are used for place names:
- The country name is suppressed for locations in the United States. The result is that the names of US States will be sorted alphabetically with country names.
- For German place names, I ignore all of the state name changes that occurred over time and use the place names used by the LDS in classifying their microfilms of German records. I use the modern name of Germany and do not try to track the history of the German states. For example, I use Rheinland-Pfälz, Germany for the location of Nanzweiler, even though it may be listed as part of the Kingdom of Bavaria in US records of the nineteenth century.
- For Hungarian place names, I use the names of the un-partitioned, pre-World War I Hungary and not the current place/country names. I have mostly used the Hungarian spelling of the town name but sometimes I may use the German spelling.
- For places where I have included latitude and longitude data, you will see a "G in a box" icon. If clicked, it will load a Google Map for the location. Often there is a satellite view available for the location that will allow you to zoom in and see actual streets and homes.
