She was the daughter of Juan Epitacio Aguirre and Refugia Gutierrez
(granddaughter) Census 1880Carmel was listed as a granddaughter in the household of Carmel Alarcon (given age 48) on the 1880 Census in Silver City, Grant County, New Mexico. She was working in the mines to support her grandmother and her brothers, who were attending school. Based on her date of birth, she would have been 7-8 years old.2
Marriage*She married first Francisco Quesada, son of Rafael Quesada and Candelaria Bencomo, on 27 March 1882 in St. Vincent De Paul Church, located in Silver City, Grant County, New Mexico. Carmen was approximately 9-10 years old at the time of this marriage. Her first child would not be born for 6 more years.3
Marriage*She married second John Henry Velton, son of Michael Velten and Katherine Miller, on 24 February 1897 in Morenci, Graham County, Arizona Territory. John and Carmen were married by James Langerman, a Justice of the Peace. Witnesses were Steben Aquirre and W. M. Bamelly. The marriage return was filed at the courthouse on 3 Mar 1897 by W. W. Dawson, Clerk of the Probate Court.4
(wife) Census 1900Carmel was listed as the wife of John H. Velton (given age 37) on the 1900 Census in Morenci, Graham County, Arizona Territory.5
Divorce Filing*Carmen filed for divorce from John Henry Velton in 1910 at Superior Court, located in Safford, Graham County, Arizona. It is known that they were divorcing by the year 1910 because of several newspaper accounts of the continuation of the case by the District Court (see article). No final papers of the divorce were found in the archives of the State Library in Phoenix, however.6
Census 1910*"Herman" Velton (given age 38) was listed as the head of household on the 1910 Census recorded 15 April 1910 in Clifton, Graham County, Arizona. The official date of this census was 15 Apr 1910. Also living in the household were, her sons, recorded as Frank Velton (given age 21), Steve Velton (given age 19), John Velton (given age 14) and Willie Velton (given age 12), her daughters, recorded as Hortense Velton (given age 16) and Cora Ma Velton (given age 8). Carmen's name was misspelled as Herman on this census. John had left and Carmen was living on "her own account." She reported that she had been married twice and was the mother of 10 children, 6 of them still living and enumerated in this census. Her son Frank worked as a mill man at an ore concentrator. Steve was also employed and son John worked as a blacksmith at a machine shop.7
DivorceCarmen was granted a divorce from John Henry Velton before 1918.8
Death*Carmen died on 14 October 1918 in Ray, Pinal County, Arizona, at age 45. She died quickly from pneumonia caused by the flu during the Spanish Influenza epidemic. According to the newspaper in Ray, The Arizona Copper Camp, at the time of her death there were more than 600 cases of the flu in Ray and Sonora, with ten deaths already reported.9,1,10
Burial*She was buried on 16 October 1918 in Ray Cemetery, located in Ray, Pinal County, Arizona. Because of the flu pandemic, she was buried in a private ceremony with just family members present. Note: The Ray Cemetery was later moved to Kearny, Arizona and is now called the Ray Memorial Cemetery, located on Arizona Highway 177. A photo of the gravestone can be viewed here, although the stone is illegible.1
Obit*The obituary of Carmen Aguirre appeared 19 October 1918 in The Arizona Copper Camp published in Ray, Pinal County, Arizona. Stephen Velton (son), Mrs. C. E. Talbot (daughter), John Velton (son), William Velton (son) and Miss Cora Velton (daughter) were listed as survivors. The following is a transcription of that obituary.10
Obit-Text*
"Mrs. J. H. Velton, for the past ten years a resident of Ray, died at the family residence here on Monday last from pneumonia. Burial was made in the Ray cemetery.

"Mrs. Velton was sick only a short time. She had gone to Phoenix last week and while there contracted a cold, which rapidly developed into pneumonia. She was confined to her bed immediately upon her return to Ray, and death followed on Monday last. Owing to the prevailing epdiemic of Spanish influenza, the funeral was private."

"Mrs. Velton is survived by five children, three sons and two daughters. They are John Velton, who is on his way to France, and who could not be reached with the sad word of his mother's death; Stephen and William Velton, who are employed in the Ray Consolidated; Miss Cora Velton, who is attending high school at Morenci, and Mrs. C. E. Talbot, who left Ray to join her husband at Tacoma, Wash."

"Mrs. Velton had a personality that made her many friends here, and the entire family has the sincere sympathy of the people of Ray in their bereavement"
