An Old Settler Gone
Mrs. Gertrude Stodden, Aged 88 Years Passed Away Last Friday

     Mrs. Gertrude Stodden passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Schuh, on Sioux street on Friday, May 23, 1919. Mrs. Stodden was born in Germany on December 6, 1831, and would thus be aged 88 years, 5 months and 16 days at the time of her death.
     She came to this country in the year 1881, with her husband and children, the family settling on a farm eight and one-half miles southeast of Mapleton, where they resided for many years, and the lady has been a resident of this vicinity ever since. Her husband passed away on June 30, 1893.
     She was the mother of ten children, one of whom died in infancy, while another passed away at Dow City some eighteen years ago. The remaining children are: Nick Stodden, Phillip, S.D; Mrs. Adam Schuh, Mapleton; Pat Stodden, Charter Oak; Mrs. Kate Geddes, Algona, Iowa; Matt Stodden, Long Beach, Calif; John, Andrew and Adolph Stodden, Mapleton, All these were present at the bedside when the summons came, except Nick and Matt, who were unable to get here even in time for the funeral.
     Funeral services were conducted from St. Mary's church by Rev. Schenkelberg on Saturday at 8:30 a. m., and the remains were taken to Charter Oak for interment.
