Biography* | Rich Velten was born in South St.Louis in June of 1945. He attended St. Louis Public Schools and graduated from Southwest High School in 1963. He attended the University of Missouri and graduated with a degree in Engineering. Rich spent his working career as an engineer with McDonnell Douglas and other engineering firms. He was a registered Professional Engineer.
In 1969 he married Marilyn Vogel and they celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 2019. He was a wonderful father to Mike and Scott Velten. Rich was a den leader and Cubmaster while the boys were in Cub Scouts. Scott Velten married Katharine Martin in 2014.
Rich served as an Alderman in the City of Ballwin for 8 years and was a founding member of the Ballwin Days Committee. He served as president of the West St. Louis County Jaycees and was given the prestigious JCI Senator award.
His passionate hobby was Model Trains. He was a member of the Model Railroaders at the National Museum of Transportation and a major contributor to the Holiday Model Railroad display. He also drove the antique trolleys and maintained the gates for the Museum Railroad. He was a member of the Boeing Railroad Club, past president and former treasurer of the Kirkwood Railroad Association, and was the current treasurer of the Gateway Division of the National Model Railroad Association. |
