Life Events

Birth*William Simmons was born circa 1829 in Prussia, Germany
MarriageAssumed*William is assumed to have married Rosalee Schultz before 1852 probably in Germany
Census*A census listed William as head of household on 26 June 1865 in Lawrence, Douglas County, Kansas. William, age 48, Rosalia, age 35, and their family were listed as living in the city of Lawrence, Kansas, where William was employed as a teamster. Both William and Rosalia gave their place of birth as Poland, but indicated their ethnicity was German. Neither could read or write. All of the children were born in the United States: Matthias, age 12, in Illinois; John, age 10, in Illinois; Frank, age 7, in Illinois; Cecelia; age 5, in Missouri; and Daniel, age 1, was born in Kansas.1
Census 1870*William was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census in Wakarusa Township, Douglas County, Kansas. William was listed as age 45, born in Prussia, and employed as what looks like a "dorryman". Since he was listed as a teamster in the 1865 Kansas census, the term dorryman may be related. The census also indicates he is eligible to vote, which means he was a naturalized citizen by 1870. Rosalee's name is spelled "Rosina" in this census. She was 39 and born in Prussia. They did not own land, but total household value was given as $1000.

Six children were listed: Mattie, age17, born in Illinois; John, age 15, born in Illinois; Frank, age 12, born in Illinois; Cecelia, age 9, born in Missouri; David (believed to be Daniel), age 6, born in Kansas; and Mary, unspecified age, born in Kansas.
Census 1880*William was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census in Capp's Creek Township, Barry County, Missouri. The official date of this census was 1 Jun 1880. Also living in the household were his wife, Rosa Simmons (given age 53), his sons, Frank Simmons (given age 22) and Daniel Simmons (given age 15), his daughter, Minnie Simmons (given age 8). By 1880, William and his family were farming in Capps Creek. Only Frank, Daniel, and Minnie were still at home.2
Death*William died on 4 March 1881 in Barry County, Missouri.3
Burial*He was buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, located in Pierce City, Lawrence County, Missouri.3
William Simmons Gravestone
ProbateWilliam's estate was probated 14 May 1881 at Barry County Probate Court, located in Cassville, Barry County, Missouri. William died intestate. As an indication of how very poor they were, the inventory for the estate showed his worldly possessions to be "two mules worth $60.00; two ponies worth $50.00; two heifers, $15.00; two old wagons, $20.00; farm implements, $15.00; and some household and kitchen furniture of little value." He did, however, have two contracts to purchase land in Barry county from the railroad. His widow petitioned the probate court and succeeded in having the contracts transferred to her.4
