Immigration*Louis immigrated to the United States, arriving 2 April 1870 at Port of New York, New York County, New York. Ludwig travelled to the US by himself.2 
Biography*Family lore is that Ludwig joined his brother Jacob in Cincinnati, but then decided to move to New York. He moved to Cornwall-on-Hudson, where his cousin William Backes lived. 
Marriage*Louis married Mary Jane Douglas, daughter of Robert Douglas and Bridgette Tully, in 1875 in Cornwall-on-Hudson, Orange County, New York
Census 1880*Lewis was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census in Cornwall Township, Orange County, New York. The official date of this census was 1 Jun 1880. Also living in the household were his wife, Mary Felton (given age 26), his son, Lewis D. Felton (given age 4), his daughter, Mary E. Felton (given age 1). Louis and Mary lived in Cornwall with their two children. Louis was employed as a carpet weaver.3 
Census 1900*Louis M. Velten (given age 49) was listed as the head of household on the 1900 Census recorded 4 June 1900 in Cornwall, Orange County, New York. The official date of this census was 1 Jun 1900. Also living in the household were his wife, recorded as Mary J. Velten (given age 47), his sons, recorded as Robert F. Velten (given age 19), James J. Velten (given age 16), Andrew J. Velten (given age 14) and Francis Velten (given age 5), his daughters, recorded as Beatrice Velten (given age 12), Catherine Velten (given age 10) and Caroline Velten (given age 8). Louis and Mary Jane lived in Cornwall with seven of their children. They were married for 24 years and Mary was the mother of ten children, eight of whom were still living. Louis was employed as a carpet weaver, son Robert was employed as a groom, James as a day laborer, and Andrew as a grocery clerk. The rest of the children were in school.4

The official date of this census was 1 Jan 1920. Also living in the household were his wife, recorded as Mary Velten (given age 67), his son, recorded as Francis Velten (given age 23). Louis and Mary lived on Academy Avenue with their son Francis. Louis was a gardener for an estate in Cornwall. Francis was a radio operator aboard merchant ships.5 
Census 1930*Louis was listed as the head of household on the 1930 Census recorded 12 April 1930 in Cornwall Township, Orange County, New York. The official date of this census was 1 Apr 1930. Also living in the household were his wife, recorded as Mary Velton (given age 77), his daughter, recorded as Carolyn Velton (given age 38). Louis and Mary resided in Cornwall with thier daughter, Caroline. Their neighbors were Martin and Mary Bockis.6 
Death*Louis died on 19 February 1935 in Cornwall-on-Hudson, Orange County, New York, at age 82.7 
Burial*He was buried in St. Thomas of Canterbury Cemetery, located in Cornwall-on-Hudson, Orange County, New York.7
