Velten and Related Families in the United States

Ancestry has a map that shows the distribution of the Velten surname in the United States, based on the 1920 census records. The biggest concentration was in New York, which was a port of entry and destination for many immigrants. Louis Velten of Nanzweiler settled in Cornwall on Hudson, a town on the Hudson with carpet mills and a busy river port. Adam Velten was a tailor in Reifenberg and settled in Brooklyn with his family, where he worked in the garment industry.

The next greatest concentration was in Maryland, Indiana and Ohio. Nicholas and Jacob Velten from Nanzweiler settled in Lafayette, Indiana and their descendants still live in the area. In Ohio, Michael Velten from Nanzdiezweiler located in Fort Recovery near the Indiana border. Daniel Velten from Nanzweiler settled originally in Cincinnati before moving across the river to Kentucky. His descendants still live in the greater Cincinnati area (including northern Kentucky). There were several Velten families who settled in Baltimore, but I know nothing about them.

The Midwestern states of Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota are next in number of Velten families. Nicholas Velten of Nanzdiezweiler (brother of Michael in Fort Recovery), like his brother a harness maker by trade, settled in Ashland, Illinois.

The following map shows some of the locations in the United States where our Velten ancestors settled:
