Raymond O. Velten, 1910-2006, Sedalia

Raymond O. Velten, 95, of Sedalia, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006, at Boone Hospital in Columbia.

He was born Nov. 11, 1910, in Pierce City, a son of Charles David and Josephine Schallert Velten. On Aug. 20, 1940, in Bahner, he was married to Anna Meyer, who survives of the home.

Mr. Velten was raised and educated in Pierce City. He worked for Local 663 Construction Union for more than 60 years. He worked at Rival for six years, A & E Colvin Construction for more than 20 years and Quicksilver Water Co. for seven years. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. He enjoyed gardening and flowers. He was a Missouri Tigers fan and enjoyed St. Louis Cardinals baseball. He enjoyed playing cards with children.

Surviving are eight daughters, Ann Ganson, Mary Philliber, Marti Weiss, Charlet Monsees and Karen Burks, all of Sedalia, Margi Kettner, of Overland Park, Kan., Jan Gray, of Villisca, Iowa, and Cindy Rhoads, of Columbia; two sons, Dave Velten and Dan Velten, both of Sedalia; a brother, George Velten, of Pierce City; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Dennis Velten.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with the Rev. Vincent Hoying officiating. Pallbearers will be Todd Ganson, Jeff Velten, Matthew Green, Kyle Weiss, Keith Weiss, Eric Monsees, Bret Monsees, Joel Burks and Brenton Rhoads. Honorary pallbearers will be Eugene Colvin, Terri Rader, Tonya Kindle, Gina Klein, Tammy Owens, Amy Velten, Christy Velten, Lindsay Burks and Caitlin Rhoads. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call after 8 a.m. Saturday at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel, where the rosary will be recited at 8:30 a.m. Visitation will follow from 9 a.m. until service time.

The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Patrick Catholic Church, in care of the funeral chapel.
