Clyde Howard Ashe

Services: Wed., Dec. 29, 10 a.m.

Services will be held at Valley Baptist Church, 4800 Fruitvale Ave., for Clyde Howard Ashe, 84, who passed away December 21, 2004. Pastor Phil Neighbors will officiate and interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park, 3700 River Blvd.

Clyde Howard Ashe was born on February 21, 1920, in Strayhorn, Mississippi to Clyde and Katie Ashe. He was raised there and in July 1941, entered the Air Corps when he was sent to Bakersfield, California. There, Howard met his wife of 55 years, Veda Bell who preceded him in death in 1997. After training, he was sent to the Pacific Theater and completed his duty in December 1945. At that time, Howard came back to Bakersfield to collect his wife and daughter and went back to Mississippi.

In Mississippi, Howard tried cotton farming but the boll weevil won out and he was hired by United Air Lines, and worked for 30 years. During that time, United sent him to San Francisco and then Los Angeles. He retired to Bakersfield where he enjoyed his vegetable garden and working in the garage.

Howard is survived by his daughters, Mary VaJean Taylor and her husband, Lewis of Racine, Wisconsin and Karen Rodger and her husband, Brett of Bakersfield; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. He is also missed by his brother, Harvey and Lou Ashe of Tunica, MS; sister, Laura and Carl Laughlin of Calhoun City, MS; two sisters-in-law, Brylie Ashe of Sarah, MS and Opal Fulce of Bakersfield and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation begins Tuesday 9:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m.
