Biography* | Josef Müller was born on New Year's day, January 1, 1808, in the tiny village of Werschau, the son of Josef Müller, a farmer, and Maria Anna Rücker. Werschau is located in the Landkreis (county) of Limburg in Hessen-Nassau. On March 7, 1833, Joseph married Catherine Pabst, from the nearby village of Niederselters. Catherine's parents were Wilhelm Pabst and Elisabethe Jssel. The couple lived in Werschau and had 8 children between the years 1834-1852. Three of these children died and are buried in Werschau.
Somewhere between the years 1852-1855, the Mueller family emigrated to America. They initially settled in Huron township in Erie county, near Sandusky on Lake Erie. Shortly after arriving, the spelling of the family name was changed to Miller. In 1863, Joseph Miller purchased 160 acres of land in Reedtown, a small, mostly Catholic farming community on the Sandusky-Columbus turnpike in Reed township, Seneca county. The Miller family has lived in or about Reed township ever since. Sons Joseph and John married and farmed in Reedtown. Many of their descendants still do.
Daughter Margaret married Valentine Daniels, a prosperous farmer of Erie county, in 1861. In 1865 Valentine bought land in Reedtown near Joseph Miller. All of the above are buried in the little cemetery behind Assumption Catholic church in Reedtown. Daughter Catherine married Michael Velten in 1856. The Veltens lived with or near the Millers until 1881, when they set off for Missouri. They are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Pierce City, Missouri. Daughter Elizabeth married George Schwartz, a farmer of Huron county. They lived in Bismarck, a small German Catholic settlement in Sherman township, Huron county, a short distance from Reedtown. The Schwartzes are buried in the cemetery of St. Sebastian's Church in Bismarck. |
