Raymond H. Smoot

Raymond H. Smoot, 74, of 1834 N. TR 183, Republic, died Saturday, June 16, 2007, at Autumnwood Care Center, Tiffin.

He was born May 3, 1933, in Tiffin, to the late Fred B. and Helen M. (Miller) Smoot. On Oct. 8, 1955, he married Mardella Daniel at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Republic. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Gary (Janet) Smoot of Fredericksburg, Va., and Gerald (Nancy) Smoot of Republic; a daughter, Crista Heibertshausen of Republic; and seven grandchildren, Matt Smoot of Fredericksburg, Va., Kyle Smoot of Charlottesville, Va., Melissa (Alex) Wolf of Upper Sandusky, Brian Heibertshausen of Republic; Lauren Heibertshausen of Republic, Beth (Cory) Fry of Bloomville and Nathan Smoot of Republic.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother.

Mr. Smoot was a member of the Republic United Church of Christ and had served as an elder, trustee and deacon several times. He was a 1951 graduate of Scipio Republic High School and was a past member of the Scipio Republic School Board and also the Seneca East School Board of Education. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in the Korean War from 1953 to 1955.

Retiring in 1991, Mr. Smoot was employed as a mold maker at American Standard for 40 years. He also worked for Lindsey-Olds Funeral Home in Bloomville for eight years. His hobbies included boating, flying, snowmobiling and farming his small acreage. He was an avid NASCAR fan.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at Republic United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Jeff King and the Rev. Joseph Szybka officiating. Burial will be in Farewell Retreat Cemetery, Republic.

Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2007, at Lindsey-Olds Funeral Home, 3085 S. SR 19, Bloomville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church, Mercy Hospital ICC Unit, the Autumnwood Care Center Activity Fund or Community Hospice Care.
